This is version one, it is accurate, but we will add more detail, house member totals and track down the states of many of the earmarks (we have to do a little digging in some cases where they are not described). So check back frequently. And remember, this is just the Omnibus and does not include the three FY09 spending bills that passed back in the fall (Defense, Homeland Security, and Military Construction/Veterans Affairs) that had more than 2,000 earmarks worth $6.6 billion. source.

The American CongressThe American CongressThe American Congress provides the most insightful, up-to-date treatment of congressional politics available in an undergraduate text. Informed by the authors' Capitol Hill experience and nationally recognized scholarship, this book presents a crisp introduction to all major features of Congress: its party and committee systems, leadership, and voting and floor activity. The American Congress has the most in-depth discussion of the place of the president, the courts, and interest groups in congressional policy making available in a text. The authors blend an emphasis on recent developments in congressional politics with a clear discussion of the rules of the game, the history of key features of Congress, and stories from recent Congresses that bring politics to life. No other text weaves into the discussion the important ideas of recent political science research. The book includes the most comprehensive list of suggested readings and Internet resources on Congress to date.
The Broken Branch: How Congress Is Failing America and How to Get It Back on Track (Institutions of American Democracy)The Broken Branch: How Congress Is Failing America and How to Get It Back on Track (Institutions of American Democracy)The Broken Branch offers both a brilliant diagnosis of the cause of Congressional decline and a much-needed blueprint for change, from two experts who understand politics and revere our institutions, but believe that Congress has become deeply dysfunctional. Mann and Ornstein, two of the nation's most renowned and judicious scholars of government and politics, bring to light the historical roots of Congress's current maladies, examining 40 years of uninterrupted Democratic control of the House and the stunning midterm election victory of 1994 that propelled Republicans into the majority in both House and Senate. The byproduct of that long and grueling but ultimately successful Republican campaign, the authors reveal, was a weakened institution bitterly divided between the parties. They highlight the dramatic shift in Congress from a highly decentralized, committee-based institution into a much more regimented one in which party increasingly trumps committee. The resultant changes in the policy process--the demise of regular order, the decline of deliberation, and the weakening of our system of checks and balances--have all compromised the role of Congress in the American Constitutional system. From tax cuts to the war against Saddam Hussein to a Medicare prescription drug benefit, the Legislative process has been bent to serve immediate presidential interests and have often resulted in poorly crafted and stealthily passed laws. Strong majority leadership in Congress, the authors conclude, led not to a vigorous exertion of congressional authority but to a general passivity in the face of executive power.

Cancel Christmas*Cancel Christmas*Cancel Christmas! will make you laugh and make you angry. It could happen. Greed, ambition, and the misuse of taxpayer money are nothing new. This book depicts the classic struggle between might and right; and between raw power and thoughtful evaluation. For some, the will of the people doesn’t matter since ‘people don’t count’ as one major character says in the book.

Cancel Christmas! is about character, and the conflicting emotions and forces that permeate human life – greed, fear, love, tradition, duty, and conscience. One reviewer stated, “…a timeless tale that speaks volumes to all of us….a modern Christmas Carol.”

I wrote this book because I was angry at the waste in government. The so-called stimulus bill contained thousands of earmarks costing the taxpayers billions to satisfy the desires of members of Congress and not necessarily the desires or needs of the people. An attitude of owning a seat in Congress with continual succession rights seems to permeate the actions of some members. It’s about time we understand what is going on. That is one of the reasons I wrote this book.

I also wrote it because I sensed a increase in assaults on morality and religious belief. We are a free country. We should not only be free to say what we wish, to worship as we wish, but equally important to be free of attacks on what we believe. That’s the second reason I wrote this book.

The third reason is that I think it’s about time civility and morality start returning to our daily lives. Casual sex, bendable ethics, and a me-first attitude are not what made this country great, and a champion of people all the world. It’s about time we return to basics.

That’s why I wrote this book. I hope you read it. I hope you agree with me, but you are free to disagree as much as you wish. That’s what freedom is. I endorse your right to disagree with me, even though I hope you will at least read the book.
