The story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show’s questions. Each chapter of Jamal’s increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show’s seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out. At the heart of its storytelling lies the question of how anyone comes to know the things they know about life and love. source.

Good movie. Original story. A feel good movie. Why was it rated R? Which slums are worst, Baghdad or Mumbai?

Daughters: The Heartbreak of Human TraffickingDaughters: The Heartbreak of Human TraffickingThousands of young American girls have been abducted or lured from their normal lives and made into sex slaves. While many Americans have heard of human trafficking in other parts of the world -- Thailand, Cambodia, Latin America and eastern Europe, for example -- few people know it happens in the United States.
The FBI estimates that well over 100,000 children and young women are trafficked in America today. They range in age from 9 to 19, with the average age being 11. UNICEF estimates that 2 million children per year are exploited in prostitution or pornography.
As many as 300,000 American youth may be at risk of commercial sexual exploitation at any time. Especially vulnerable are the homeless and runaways...one third of runaway youths--girls and boys both--will be lured into prostitution within 48 hours on the streets.
Synopsis:
Emotion in the house where Emma grew up was rare, so, when Emma disappeared it took a couple days before her aunt actually realized Emma was missing. Then a month went by, quickly. A little late to call the police. Aunt Evelyn knew of only one person who, maybe, would care Emma was missing, who, maybe, would do something about getting Emma back, and, who--as she recalled--would do anything for Emma:
Bailey Forbes. If Emma's mother--Aunt Evelyn's sister--hadn't died, Bailey would have married her and adopted Emma. Yes, that was the plan. Little sister was so in love with that man...but little sister did die, and that changed everything. Auntie Evelyn allowed Bailey and Emma to have continued contact for awhile, but it couldn't go on. No blood was involved, and Auntie Evelyn had never bought into the idea that blood wasn't necessary for true bonding.
But eleven years had passed. Would Bailey even remember Emma? Or care?
The Real SlumdogsThe Real SlumdogsTravel into the heart of the slum made famous by the Oscar-winning "Slumdog Millionaire" - Dharavi, in Mumbai, India. In this squalid, pest-ridden place with irregular water, intermittent electricity and open sewers, one million people are squeezed into just one square mile. But beneath the surface is a city with its own multimillion-dollar recycling industry and neighborhoods where ordinary people work hard to make a better life for themselves. National Geographic follows a number of Dharavi residents, such as Laxmi, a single mother who searches through garbage for recyclable materials and has just scraped up enough money to put her daughter into a local school; Shailesh, a rickshaw driver who wants to make it in Bollywood; and 12-year-old schoolboy Jigha, who dreams of becoming a scientist.

Lagaan - Once Upon a Time in IndiaLagaan - Once Upon a Time in IndiaWould you believe the most enchanting musical of the year is an almost four-hour-long epic about a ragtag group of 19th-century Indian farmers who form a cricket team to take on an arrogant British captain? The old-fashioned Hollywood musical is alive and well in India's Bollywood industry, where the joyful explosion of music and dance and innocent romance abounds in sweeping epics. In this infectious tale of bloodless revolution, the underdog outcasts and oddballs of a fractured village pull together into a unified team to take on the oppressive colonial Brits at their own game. Think The Longest Yard meets The Seven Samurai by way of Rudyard Kipling, with cricket bats, choreographed dance numbers, romantic triangles, and a rousing call to solidarity. There are no surprises, but what spirit, what color, what good fun! --Sean Axmaker
