Taxpayers for Common Sense

view the Pork (xls).

This is version one, it is accurate, but we will add more detail, house member totals and track down the states of many of the earmarks (we have to do a little digging in some cases where they are not described). So check back frequently. And remember, this is just the Omnibus and does not include the three FY09 spending bills that passed back in the fall (Defense, Homeland Security, and Military Construction/Veterans Affairs) that had more than 2,000 earmarks worth $6.6 billion. source.

Untangling the US Deficit: Evaluating Causes, Cures and Global ImbalancesUntangling the US Deficit: Evaluating Causes, Cures and Global ImbalancesFrom a situation of near zero in 1990, the US current account deficit has expanded to a record level of almost $900 billion in 2006. Debate about the deficit's causes and consequences has also grown. Is the deficit a product of American profligacy or a 'glut of savings' in the rest of the world? Is it a disaster waiting to happen or the natural and essentially benign consequence of an integrated world economy? "Untangling the US Deficit" charts a course between these competing explanations in a systematic and rigorous approach, incorporating the latest academic research and market data, gauging the origins and sources of the deficit, its sustainability and the urgency of corrective action. Richard Iley and Mervyn Lewis conclude that there is no single cause of the US current account deficit and no single solution. While they view the deficit as primarily 'made in USA' with the monetary policy of the Greenspan Fed playing a greater role than China's exchange rate policies, the unique role of the US dollar in the world order means that the deficit is less threatening and more sustainable than is often argued. The authors see no compelling case for policy intervention to 'tackle' the deficit. This unique and well-researched book will be of great interest to academic economists and postgraduates. Market, business and government economists will also find it to be an enlightening and challenging account.
Is the US Trade Deficit Sustainable? Is the US Trade Deficit Sustainable?August 15, 2001, TOKYO (AP) The dollar slipped against the yen, extending its downward trend in New York overnight. The greenback has continued to weaken following the International Monetary Fund's warning on Tuesday that the U.S. current-account deficit -- the broadest measure of trade -- could destabilize the currency.

This startling news item should come as no surprise to anyone who has read Catherine Mann's 1999 book, Is the U.S. Trade Deficit Sustainable? in which she warned that the deficit would be sustainable for only a few years if the dollar did not begin its own modest decline. Indeed, the questions she raised in the following book description are just as poignant today as they were in 1999:

The United States trade deficit has hit record levels and continues to rise. Is a chronic and widening deficit sustainable or will the dollar crash, perhaps taking the economy with it? If the problem was one of "twin deficits," why has the external deficit continued to worsen even as the budget deficit narrowed to zero? If US companies are so intensely competitive, why does the external deficit persist? Does the external deficit represent protectionism abroad; will it lead to protectionism at home?

This study seeks to answer these perennial questions about the trade deficit. Each chapter presents simple analytical frameworks as a basis for concise, succinct, and clear statements on each major issue. The last section of the book provides an outlook for the deficit and suggests alternative policy courses for dealing with it.
